An Ocean Awaits

Sweetie and I are celebrating our 22nd anniversary of our first kiss/date thing this weekend by going away to the ocean with the boys. It’s also Ike’s fourth birthday and what better way to celebrate then by watching the winter storms batter the seaside town of Ocean Shores from the comforts of our own hotel suite. Last year when we went, the weather was kind and the sun shone and we wandered about in our bare feet. Ike loves everything about the Pacific Ocean, and even at four, understands its great power and beauty.

We’re bringing board games though, I mean, we’re not that stupid. The place has an indoor pool, hot tubs and a sauna, fireplaces and large living rooms to spread out and read books and easy access to the beach; a necessity when traveling with Ike.

We leave Saturday and come home Monday. I have registration for school on Monday morning, which we’ll do on the way back from the beach as Olympia is on the way. There’s an evening writing class I’m interested in taking that I’m hoping will give me the discipline to get more writing done and also help with me expanding my narrative thread. I’m so used to working in the space of a few paragraphs that I have no idea how to expand beyond that.

This week I’m spending my life sleepwalking, unaware of the sunny skies or rain or cold wind blowing out of the east. It’s an insular existence to be sure, but unlike when you’re really dreaming I’m finding this one a bit harder to snap out of. Days are going by but I’m not very interested in moving. Time is passing in that inexorable way it does and I’m standing here clay footed and static.

Who am I kidding? We all know it’s just a lack of sleep…brought upon myself for wanting to watch the end of American Chopper, then fixing a leaky diaper, helping the one remaining cat who wanders around at night howling, feel not so abandoned and being kicked in the kidneys by the older boy for most of the night.

Soon, very soon, we will all be headed out that door into a brave new sunshine, putting the trials of the past four years behind us. Heck, the crocuses are all in full bloom around the park these days and the daffodils are only a few weeks away.

And a silver ocean awaits…
