Field Day

I volunteered for Field Day at the older boy’s school today. The 1st and 2nd graders at his school take over Wrights Park for a few hours in the afternoon near the end of the year and play games at the various gaming stations. Jack’s mom, Carra, and I were in charge of the fire bucket brigade game, where there is a full bucket at one end of a line of kids and an empty bucket at the other end and the kids pass the bucket hand-to-hand down the line.

In the beginning when we first got there Mrs. Haney took us though each of the stations explaining how the games went and the rules at that particular stop. There was the water balloon toss, the tug-of-war, the shoe toss, the obstacle course, the frog toss, and our station. We were allowed to pick our own station and of so of course, I picked the one where I knew the kids would get the most wet, I also picked the one where I didn’t actually have to walk too, since that was the last station we all ended up at.

By the end of the afternoon, it was pretty clear that we had the best event. I had the Older Boy’s class first, who did a great job, but didn’t wind up getting all that wet, as the afternoon went on, however, the classes that got to us, we a lot more whipped up and so by the seventh and last class of the day, water was flying all over the place and the kids were drenched head to toe.

There were popsicles given out to all the students as well as jungle snap bracelets at the end of the afternoon. All the parents who volunteered were brought up to have their own water balloon toss, won by the principal and his assistant. (Fixed? Maybe, although I’ve got the feeling they’ve been involved in a few water balloon competitions in the past)

I was no doubt the loudest parent out there. When I rev it up, my voice does a pretty decent job of carrying across an open field so that when at the end Mrs. Haney came over to out corner to say I could relax now, I knew to not take it personally. The kids were great, and at no time did it descend into the 7 year old chaos vortex that occurs in the playground after school’s been let out.

I also get mad props from the kids for being the Older Boys dad. Everyone knows the Older Boy, and everyone wanted me to know that they know him.

Right now I’ve found a new Wi-Fi truck stop to park my computer at for the afternoon. I brought them a Prairie Dogs CD to see if I could get a gig here, though with all the upcoming shows, I’m not sure when I would fit it in. Right now July is really starting to get booked up so if you haven’t taken a look at the Prairie Dogs page for upcoming show’s lately, come by and check it out.

Tonight I’m getting together with The Last Chance Romeo’s to play a little music. Dave and I are getting up to play Let It Be Of You off of Brand New Heart with their band on Monday June 20th at the Swiss Tavern. We’ve started booking a lot of shows together as we have very comparable styles. Tomorrow night is the Suitcase Art get-together where everyone brings their suitcase art to show each other. I’ll post a proper picture of the one I made when I get one.
