The new studio, the old house
My friend Eric has a new instant family, changing what had been a single dad and two kids to a happy couple with five. Strangely enough neither of their houses decided to grow to accommodate this sudden increase in habitants so they’ve been packing things up in boxes for the move to their new home. I mention this because I have benefited from this news by acquiring a box from Eric that housed the Digidesign MBox, a small yet powerful recording studio that I can run from this laptop. It is an upgrade from the Digi001 that I currently use in the shed for all my recording, all the while maintaining a friendly compatibility between the two systems.
Along with the new recording equipment are a number of add-on’s, things like drums and graphic EQ’s, reverbs and compressors, video editing software and auto-tuners for when I sing off key. While I have had limited opportunity to use it so far, I’m excited about being able to come in from the shed to record things like the piano and my pump organ.
But like all things that happen in this house, there is little room where I can find a place to set everything up. So far I’ve camped for a while at the kitchen table, but since the dining room has already sans table due to all my other equipment, this leaves us no place to eat our meals. The top of the piano is another possibility, but due to lack of a wall outlet, it’s pretty limited as well.
This gets to the root of why this house isn’t the right house for us. The house is used like this:
Ike gets the living room. This keeps him close to the family, there’s a TV where he can watch his movies, and Sweetie and I have close access to diapers, formula and the like. The Older Boy generally takes over the TV room, it’s where the Gamecube is and it’s also the space where he and his friends will go and hang out, mostly because his bedroom is so small and dark. Since the dining room has no table or chairs due to the piano, the pump organ, my guitars, amp, djembe, buffet and assorted other things, there is no room to hang out there, unless you find the need to hang out on the piano bench, in front of the piano.
This leaves the kitchen table, where Sweetie and I tend to take over a corner so we can check our email and surf the internet, without having to listen to Ike’s Barney videos for the 100th time, or the sounds of The Simpson’s Hit and Run.
The next house is going to solve all these problems. How, we’re not exactly sure…but when you live in a 1800 square foot house and the only place you have to carry on a conversation is on hard kitchen chairs, then you know that this is not the place for us.
We’re looking, but as of yet we haven’t sat down to draw a picture. Anyone who has spent any time at this website knows that nothing really ever gets done around here until Sweetie and I sit down to draw a picture. Before the universe can provide, it needs to know what you’re asking for. Because really…the universe just wants to help.
